Question

ken livingstone, The final choice for who becomes Mayor of London seems to be between yourself and Boris Johnson. How much do you think it will be decided on policies and how much on personalities?

Answer

Being Mayor of London is too serious a job for the election to be decided on the basis of personality alone.

This election is about taking the big decisions that affect every Londoner, from the £1billion a year tube upgrades to the £16 billion Crossrail project.

I will carry on transforming bus services, provide an extra 1,000 police officers on the beat and keep the neighbourhood police teams, fund £79 million for young people to have safe places to go outside school, and safeguard the policy that 50% of all new housing is affordable. And I will make tackling climate change and the environment a priority.

I have a track record of managing London - improving bus services, putting police back on the beat. Dealing with the highs and lows of London such as winning the Olympics and the terrorist attack on 7 July.

In contrast, Boris Johnson’s incompetent plans on buses have descended into chaos with his admission that a new Routemaster bus would cost over £100m, rather than the £8m he originally claimed.

Imagine Boris Johnson in charge of London’s £39bn transport budget. Suddenly he’s not so funny.

sunnyday at Apr 29 2008 12:00:00 AM I would like to be able to say "Thankyou Mr.Livingstone" for your answer - but instead of answering my question you have merely taken the opportunity to throw some of your propaganda at me. Yesterday you had my vote - on the first of May it will go to Boris.
bonzo1 at May 01 2008 12:00:00 AM At least you got an answer off Ken. Where are Johnson's answers?
ryanscribe at May 02 2008 12:00:00 AM Sadly, despite *repeated* chasing and promises, Boris never finally answered his questions. We spoke to and met his PR people who said he would reply, but for whatever reason he did not. It has to be noted that Boris was a 'no show' at several events during the campaign, for example he didn't turn up to several BBC Today programme interviews. At the end of the day, and with limited resources, we've done our best here. It's up to you guys to draw any inference from Boris not answering (and the votes are now in!). Nick Ryan
