Answer

Stansted Airport has an opportunity, within the present planning permission to grow to 25 million passengers a year and to double its cargo operations. It should also focus more on meeting the needs of business travel and less on cheap leisure flights. And it has an opportunity to develop more long haul services which would better service the needs of the East of England Region instead of its present focus as the UK mecca for cheap flights to Europe. There is also much which could be done to reduce the adverse impacts of the airport, for example by banning the noisiest planes, improving the rail infrastucture so as to take pressure off the roads, and ending night flights. If BAA showed a genuine willingness to minimise the worst impacts of the airport, there would be scope for constructive dialogue between SSE and BAA.
