keithwhu at Dec 04 2007 12:00:00 AM : I think Putin understands democracy very well - promoting nationalism is a sure-fire vote winner (Margaret Thatcher 1981) - of course, banning opposition parties and imprisoning their leaders also helps in the election stakes.

rezashah at Dec 06 2007 12:00:00 AM : How ironic that the rigged Russian election results coincide with Hugo Chavez's referendum failure. Though Chavez is no saint, he accepts his failure. Putin rigs his result yet he's supposed to be our- USA, UK, etc. - acceptable ally! Who's better/worse?
